Reading back in my journal, I discovered that I had set some goals for after college. It's a good thing that that is a really open ended time frame. Here's the report:

I'm posting just because I just stood up on my chair. I looked in all directions, and here is what I saw:
This is the danger of Live Journal. Sometimes I just feel inspired to write, and whoever reads may suffer the consequences.

It is time for a rearrangement of furniture, and a general cleaning of the apartment.
In other news, my new computer ROCKS: Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM (4GB on the way), 320GB HD + 500GB USB HD, ATI Radeon 2600 Pro, Antec Sonata III and a Zerotherm "butterfly" chip cooler. It all adds up to "fast and quiet", and a good chance that I won't have to buy a computer again for three years, which is my target.

Looks like it's time for the annual post to my LJ (Which appears to bear the misnomer "The Daily Dave").
Events of today include:
Wow, LJ is much improved since my last post over a year ago.Aureal Permeation: Summer fan drones

Whiteboards have a tray for holding markers and erasers. They typically hold two kinds of markers: Dry-erase markers, and God-should-have-used-this-marker-to-write-the-ten-commandments markers. As a side note, I have a new job at Xerox, and Xerox doesn't block their employees from accessing LJ. |
» Snow
4 wheel drive + maybe 9-12 inches (roads had between 3-6) of snow + 1:00 AM = FUN!
Slipping and sliding was as expected, snow drifts were high (I'm guessing up to 18") due to very windy conditions. There was occasional whiteout. Traffic was minimal, and at least 50% snow plows. I saw some snowmobilers, and my usual parking spot was filled in on the left with 2 feet of blown snow, so I backed in, which took 3 tries due to the snow drift, even with 4WD. I also stopped in K-Mart's parking lot and righted the a stoptional that a snow plow had presumably knocked over. In fact, the only problem I had was that I wasn't wearing snow boots, so getting into and out of my car (and clearing it off) made my feet cold and wet. Oh, and my car is really slow to give any heat this winter. Really just minor nuisances.

» Mmm... Job
I have a job. A very small company. An NDA is involved. 'nuff said.
For some reason I can't seem to get excited as everyone else seems to be about me getting a job. I'm beginning to realize I would have been happy either way. This is partly because there are still three or four headaches to get out of the way. I could be considerably more excited when I get the keys to an apartment (plus electric, water, phone, cable, cable-modem, possibly gas). I'll be possibly more excited when my parents come and move me out of this 12#@#%$@! aparment I'm in now. It's a great apartment, I've just been here too long, and there are some very depressing people around: the college students. On Saturday the 14th, I may not be excited, but I'll be very happy, as there's a canoe excursion. I'll be both happy and excited when the very small NDA-bearing company sells a product, which I'll probably by that time have had a significant part in making. As for my current sutiation in life, I say this: I didn't fail to leave room for improvement.

» Daemon Tools
I use Daemon Tools to play my video games without the CD. Out of curiosity, I looked at the CD's for Total Annihilation I had ripped previously, because I knew they contained audio tracks. As it turns out, AudioCatalyst is able to rip the audio off of the images of the CD's, and since there is no CD involved, it rips & encodes anywhere from 25x - 42x

» Big choices day.
My day was somewhat eventful. Since I am not going to finish my thesis by the Aug. 13 deadline, I am ditching the BS/MS program, getting my BS mid-August, and continuing as an MS-only student. This will give me until August 2008 to finish. The downside is I'll have to take one more course (of my choosing from the graduate-level offerings), and may lose my thesis topic. I'll also be paying graduate-level tuition rates after this.
I'll be able to get a job and not deal with school for the next 3-6 months (assuming I'll be able to get a job), so I'll have time to do the things I'd rather be doing for a while.
Tomorrow I devote to finding a job.

I was irritated by a JumboJuke entry, that I consider neither funny, nor really a joke, but simply an attack on my religion.

» Back to work
I have been having considerable trouble maintaining focus and getting actual work done on my thesis. For the first time in a long time I have resorted to doing something sensible: secluding myself in the SW corner of the 4th floor of the library with just my laptop.
( The Library )
Of course, I am currently writing this entry instead of doing actual work on my thesis, but how else would I remember this stuff? What prompted this most recent push toward productivity was a series of tapes I borrowed from my roommate Dan. The tapes were recordings of church services in his home church in Montoursville, PA. The preacher is Greg Sanford, a missionary to Venezuela.
( Summary )
Hopefully I can get my hands on the rest of the series. I am converting them to mp3 format for listening in the car. As for how these principles made it easier to get working on my thesis, suffice it to say that having something trustworthy to believe offers me the chance for better faith in God, and thus the chance for a better relationship with Him. Acknowledging that my progress in school thus far had to have been greatly assisted by God proves that my education is God's work, which he will see to completion. This is encouraging, for I have doubted whether I will ever finish.

» Yet another Mandelbrot program
That's right folks, this time it's in Python using GTK. Got the zoom feature working, next a depth adjustment and this will be the second GUI for a Mandelbrot I've written, this one being object-oriented and event driven approximately the right way. I solved the image-gets-erased-when-obscured problem. But now I need to do the image-scales-when-resized thingy without recalculating the whole fractal each time. Come on, this is the GIMP toolkit, it's gotta gave a stretch built in somewhere.

Al Dobbins is an aged and funny man. He once recited a tongue twister that left me slack-jawed. I finally found it. Rather, I finally googled for it and clicked on the first link and found it. All hail Google and beware GMail.

So I read today's slashdot article on TC, had the common kneejerk reaction, and finally posted just to calm my nerves. I feel like I've been hit with a FUD bomb and I don't know where it came from. A lot like dying in Americas Army: Operations, actually. But I did clarify my position on Windows vs. Linux.

Before College --> After Degree
After college I have said I would do or would consider: Starting a children's choir in my church Writing a PET language Writing a configure-all for linux Forming a registered quartet ( The rest of the list )
By inference I now know why retirement doesn't entail a reduction in activity. If anyone can offer insight into more realistic expectations for after college, please share.

» Bipolar day
So this is why I don't update my journal more often: it is an outlet of wrath and depression. To counter, I should mention that I got an e-mail indicating that somebody from Harris wants to discuss employment possibilities by phone. Sure, it's not an offer, but it's better than the "We got your resume" e-mail.
